How does it work?The Cross City Tunnel is a fully electronic tollroad, which means you don't have to stop and search for the cash to pay the toll. Instead you can avoid the delays associated with long queues at cash collection booths and pay for your use of the tunnel in other ways.
In order for you to pay the toll we must be able to identify your vehicle and match it to some form of payment mechanism, such as a credit card or a direct debit from a bank account.
There are two ways we can recognise your vehicle:
1. our roadside equipment can receive a unique signal from a tag, which is a small electronic device mounted on your windscreen, or
2. our roadside cameras can take a photograph of your number plate.
Vehicles with tags:
If your vehicle has a tag, the tag will be recognised as you travel through the tunnel and your toll account will be debited.
Vehicles without tags:
The cameras in the tunnel automatically photograph the number plates of all vehicles using the tunnel.
If a tag is not detected, the vehicle’s number plate will be cross-checked against your tag issuer’s registration records.
If you have registered for a Pass with RTA you are ready to go, we can send your trip details to the RTA.
What happens if I drive through the Cross City Tunnel without a tag or a pass?
Make sure you contact the RTA on 131 865 or www.rta.nsw.gov.au/myrta/myetoll/index.html within 3 days (72 hours) after you drive through the Cross City Tunnel to register your details and make arrangements to pay the toll and any administration fees you may have incurred. You’ll risk a fine and additional fees and charges if you don’t register!
